Laser Assisted hatching

Laser-assisted hatching (LAH) is an advanced technology that is performed in combination with IVF that increases the success rate of embryo implantation. If one is experiencing IVF failure due to unexplained reasons, assisted hatching is performed with IVF that helps the embryo attach to the woman's womb.

The treatment uses a highly focused infrared laser beam that removes the outermost layer zona pellucida precisely and safely. Earlier chemical and mechanical methods were used for assisted hatching of human embryos, but laser treatment used less handling of the embryo compared to traditional assisted hatching methods.

In the IVF procedure, the fertilized eggs are kept in the laboratory for 2-6 days to help them divide and help in embryo development. This embryo is placed in a women’s uterus that helps achieve pregnancy. The embryo is surrounded by a layer of zona pellucida in the process of development, and for implantation the layer breaks naturally.

In some cases, the layer hardens, and this makes it too difficult to hatch and implant. This becomes a reason for infertility in females. In laser-assisted hatching, a small crack is made before embryo implantation into the uterus and will help in successful implantation that leads to pregnancy.
